Useful tips for a sustainable holiday

Why?
We all care deeply about our planet. Who wouldn’t want nature to continue thriving, animals to have space to live without their existence being threatened, and a livable world to pass on to our children and future generations?

However, with our progress and relentless desire for “more, faster, now,” we’ve placed too much strain on the Earth. It’s time to be more cautious. Here are some travel tips to help you take a more sustainable vacation with ease, even in faraway destinations.

1 – FLYING RESPONSIBLY

If you want to travel far, flying is often unavoidable. Of course, you could stay closer to home, but you want to see the world. When flying internationally, keep the following in mind:

  • Fly Direct: Avoid layovers. Fewer flights mean less energy and pollution since takeoffs and landings produce the most greenhouse gases.
  • Fly Economy: Economy class fits more passengers per plane, which reduces the number of planes needed.
  • Offset Your Flight: At the very least, compensate for your flight’s emissions. Here’s what to know:

2 – OFFSET YOUR FLIGHT

Offset the CO2 emissions of your trip. This reduces CO2 in the atmosphere and improves living conditions worldwide.

The cost depends on the CO2 emissions of your trip. The mode of transport and destination determine the impact. To calculate your emissions or learn how much you can reduce by traveling sustainably, try Anthesis’s CO2 calculator.

More organizations now offer ways to offset flights. Check out TreesForAll or Regreener for options.

3 – EAT LOCALLY

In all Asian countries, street food is fantastic. Not only is it adventurous (what exactly are we ordering?), fun, and usually delicious, but it also supports local entrepreneurs. Most street food vendors are self-employed without a safety net, working long hours daily to make a living.

These vendors often buy local fruits and vegetables, supporting nearby farmers. This benefits the local economy because your spending directly supports the community, strengthening regional trade.

4 – LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

Check if there are alternatives to domestic flights in your destination country. Here are a few examples of sustainable travel:

  • Thailand: Instead of flying from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, take the (night) train. It’s more fun and adventurous!
  • Cambodia: Skip the flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and take the boat. You’ll get a great view of Tonle Sap Lake along the way!

5 – ALTERNATIVES TO CARS

When in cities like Bangkok, look for alternatives to cars. Bangkok, for example, has an extensive and well-connected network of metros, trains, and the Skytrain.

You can also explore the city by boat. Walking small distances is good for everyone, too. Bangkok also features increasing numbers of electric buses and taxis, making it easier to travel sustainably.

By working together, we can make a difference. Travel more sustainably with Amazing Asia Tours, consciously but just as enjoyably!

6 – AVOID ATTRACTIONS INVOLVING ANIMALS

Avoiding animal attractions doesn’t mean you can’t see animals—it just means paying attention to how they’re treated. For instance, taking photos with a sedated tiger is not sustainable tourism. Similarly, elephant rides are harmful, as their backs aren’t strong enough to carry people, contrary to popular belief.

If you want to see elephants, visit Khao Yai National Park in Thailand, where they roam freely. Taking a boat trip to spot dolphins or whales in the wild is also a more responsible way to appreciate animals.

7 – SAY NO TO PLASTIC

This may sound easier said than done. At home, you’re used to using less or no plastic, but in many Asian countries, the general culture hasn’t reached that point. In Thailand, supermarkets are prohibited from giving or selling plastic bags, and they adhere to this rule well. However, smaller shops often still use more plastic than necessary.

  • Bring a reusable bottle or thermos so you don’t need to buy plastic bottles all day.
  • Buy larger water bottles and refill your own bottle.
  • Carry a reusable (linen) bag for your shopping. You’ll be amazed at how much plastic you can avoid.

Traveling sustainably is easier than it seems!
